Eight local women will model 40 exquisite ensembles of Osterville designer Cassia Maia’s hand-painted silk creations, West Dennis goldsmith-silversmith Etta Goodstein’s handcrafted jewelry and hats created by milliner Deborah Harper of Barnstable.



Barnstable High School fashion design students will display their original creations in this event that’s bound to open eyes and generate smiles.

Harper, who has loved hats since she was a child, contributes her expertise to top off Maia’s designs. After closing her Nantucket hat shop in 2004, Harper moved to Barnstable, where she continues to create flattering chapeaus for discriminating women.



“All of my hats are handmade from special straw,” Harper says. “There’s a simple summer elegance in wearing that special hat that’s just perfect for an outfit.”



Goodstein selected jewelry to embellish Maia’s outfits and Harper’s hats. “Maia’s clothes are so bold and striking that it was a real challenge to find the right pieces for each outfit,” Goodstein says. For heavily painted designs, Goodstein chose simple earrings and bracelets; to embellish simpler outfits, she provided necklaces inlaid with gemstones.



“A lot of the blues and greens are accented by my Australian opals,” Goodstein says. “Artists living by the ocean are inspired by its many hues.”



Maia, a native of Brazil, is the daughter of a seamstress. “I learned at a very early age all kinds of handcrafts,” she says. “My Mom used to say, ‘Keep the art in everyone’s heart.”

Harper studied art in New York City and has worked with acclaimed designer Henri Bendel. She has designed for Bergdorf-Goodman and Neiman Marcus, owned a millinery shop on Nantucket, and has recently begun a bridal collection of veils and headpieces “because the Cape and Islands are big wedding destinations.”



Harper’s hats have been featured in Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour, Mademoiselle, Women’s Wear and New York Magazine.



Goodstein, who has been creating gold and silver jewelry since 1968, opened Jewelry by Etta on Route 28 in West Dennis in 1972. Since then, her creations have been displayed internationally in juried exhibitions.Shop this season's new prada bags now.
