Walking a mile in another man’s shoes is one thing but Shoes of Prey co-founder Jodie Fox has gone one better – running three kilometres in a pair of 4-inch high heels to prove they’re comfortable.



A video of Fox doing the Bondi-to-Bronte run wearing a pair of Shoes of Prey gladiator heels is the latest piece of content marketing from the Sydney-based start-up and has gained 14,000 views on YouTube since June 17.



Shoes of Prey, an online retailer that lets customers design their own shoes, raised $3 million from a group of nine investors in a series A round of funding.



Shoes of Prey customer acquisition manager Joel Pinkham says the video is part of a wider content marketing strategy that the start-up is rolling out across social media, email and re-targeting advertising.



“After we acquire a new site visitor, our aim is to engage them with interesting content that still features our product at the core and the Bondi-to-Bronte run video is a perfect example of this,” Pinkham says.



“We’re answering the frequently asked question ‘are Shoes of Prey shoes comfortable?’ but in a way that makes it 50 times more exciting and convincing than simply saying ‘yes, they are comfortable’.”



As well as featuring on the Shoes of Prey YouTube channel, the 2.5-minute video was also used as pre-roll advertising on third-party videos, re-targeting people who have previously visited the Shoes of Prey website.



The video is also on the Shoes of Prey blog and Twitter, and will soon be used in behavioural-based email marketing and in Facebook re-targeting advertisements.



Pinkham says there is more content in the works to feature in a similar way. The company is also running television and video campaigns across the UK, US and Canada as part of its international market development.



Social media agency Working Three chief executive and BRW columnist Mark Cameron says the numbers are modest, but it is interesting to consider this video in the context of the others on the Shoes of Prey YouTube channel.



Cameron points out that Shoes of Prey has only created a few videos but the fact they are all quite different suggests the company is trying different things and learning from what captures people’s imaginations.



“They’re obviously developing a content marketing strategy on a really tight budget and it definitely seems to be working for them,” Cameron says. “They’re willing to experiment and think of new creative things, showing off the product in different ways. In January Shoes of Prey opened a concession at David Jones’s Elizabeth St, Sydney, store, where consumers could design their own shoes and view samples of the materials.



Pinkham says the David Jones collaboration is “exceeding expectations” and the company is “always considering expansion of its off-line retail stores”.
