Man jailed for five months

A YOUNG Aberchirder man who was responsible for a spree of house break-ins in the village has been jailed for five months.

During the thefts, Graham Thom (21) stole a laptop computer, a tablet device and a large quantity of money, which he carried out to help get cash to feed his drug habit, Banff Sheriff Court heard last week.

Thom, who appeared from custody, pleaded guilty to stealing the items and money from three different homes in the village in May and June this year.

Fiscal depute Garry Sturrock told the court: "The fist two thefts happened on the same day on May 19 this year.

"The first home had a cash box stolen which had $2,Buy Michael Kors iPhone Cases Michael Kors handbags with big discount and free shipping!000 in it. The owners had left a small window ajar to allow ventilation in the house.

"They noticed the cash box was gone, and when they referred to their private CCTV camera system it showed the accused enter the house and go into various rooms.

"In the second incident that day the house-holder left her property and there were two handbags hanging on her kitchen chair which had a total of $50 in them.

"Neighbours saw the accused walk through a field near to the homes,Shop the latest from Michael Kors Classic Handbags. Totally free shipping and returns. thought it was suspicious and kept an eye on him.

"The witness returned and noticed the bags were gone and found them in bushes in her garden with the cash taken from them.

"The police attended and the accused voluntarily attended at a police office and he admitted taking the cash to buy drugs. He denied stealing the handbags and there was no recovery of the money in both charges.

"The third complaint happened on June 30 while the accused was on bail.

"At 6.30pm the complainer returned to their house and noticed the laptop and Amazon Kindle were missing from the property.

"The police were contacted and about half-an-hour later the accused was traced in a field opposite the property with the items.

"He admitted having them in his possession and the items were recovered to the owner."

Thom’s defence agent Leonard Burkinshaw said: "He has had a significant problem with drugs for some time."

The court was told that Thom received good support form his family who had helped stem the issue, but it has raised its head again.

"On the last occasion he was off drugs he managed to hold down employment, but he got back into it and this resulted in the offences," continued Mr Burkinshaw.

"His brother and sister have attended court today and are desperate to see him get help for his drug problem, as is the rest of his family.

"He is willing to undertake a drug-testing and treatment order as he has came to the conclusion this cannot go on.

Sheriff Philip Mann told Thom he had to be punished for the offences.Shop for Michael Kors Monogram at hotmkbags.

The impending departure of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano ought to prompt a rethinking of what is going on in Washington. Established in the wake of September 11 to better coordinate the instruments used to battle transnational terrorism, the homeland-security enterprise has been adrift for some time now. And it may not be drifting toward a good place.

Consider the talk of dismantling the department. Virtually every task undertaken by the Department of Homeland Security was performed by some federal agency before September 11. If the department were taken apart, it would go back to being a decentralized mess.Shop discounted mk handbags on hotmkbags. That hardly ranks as progress.

Plus, it would cost a pretty penny to switch everything back. Just changing all the badges and signs would bust the spending caps set by the sequester. The pain is hardly worth the gain.

Nor is there much to fear from the creation of a massive new department. Internet rumors and tantalizing tweets aside, a center of dark, devious power the Nebraska Avenue Complex is not. Homeland Security is not buying up all our ammunition. It is not building FEMA concentration camps. It is not teaming up with the Russians for a Red Dawn rerun. Rather, the department creeps along pretty much like the rest of federal bureaucracy.

Besides, the nation actually needs a department whose number-one job is making the nation a harder target for transnational terrorism. There have been at least sixty transnational, Islamist-related terrorist plots aimed at the United States since September 11. There is a real threat out there that needs to be countered.

Furthermore, Americans may have forgotten about the danger of biological, nuclear and radiological attacks, or a catastrophic strike with an electromagnetic pulse on the U.S. homeland, but these scenarios still fill the dreams of America’s enemies.

Washington made the right decision after September 11 when it decided to create a long-term, persistent enterprise to deal with transnational terrorist threats. It has just made a lot of loopy decisions since then.

The problem is with what Washington has done since the terrible attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. It has inched the nation closer to becoming a national-security garrison state—exactly what was promised would not happen.Shop hotmkbags for the latest fashion trends in Michael Kors Shoulder Bags for ladies.

"With regard to your record and these offences, especially charge three which saw a significant amount of money stolen, a custodial sentence seems the only option," he added.
